Anyone who’s ever lived somewhere where it gets hot in the summer (and that’s most of the U.S.A, folks) has had the experience of getting into your car after it’s been parked outside in blazing summer heat and the seats, steering wheel and door handles are almost too hot to touch.

It’s a drag, and can be really painful if you’re not careful. But, you don’t have to put up with this unpleasant phenomenon. You can make your car ready for summer by being proactive. Here are few suggestions how to make your summer driving experience more pleasant.

It can be cardboard, plastic, fabric, or whatever you want. The important thing is that it’s made from some kind of reflective material that radiates back some of the solar heat striking your car and keeping the interior (relatively) cool and dark.

For extra cooling, you can add reflective panels to your side windows as well. This is one of the cheapest, most effective methods possible for keeping your car cooler in the summer. Most of the time sun shades don’t cost more than a few dollars, but you’re better off buying the plastic or fabric ones since they’re more durable than the folding cardboard ones.
